Lift us up O Lord (adapted from a classic maritime eulogy)

A Border Patrol agent drives by.

I stand watching as he fades away on the horizon

and someone at my side say’s “He is gone.”

Gone where?  Gone from our sight, that is all.  He is every bit as large now as when we last saw him.  His diminished size and total loss from our sight is in us, not him.

And just at that moment, when someone at my side says  “He is gone,” there are others who are watching him as he comes over their horizon and their voices take up a glad shout- “There he comes!”

Life is a horizon and death is just the limit of our sight.

Lift us up O Lord, that we may see further.
